Basic Information About Battery Tools
The performance data of the battery packs has virtually exploded in recent years. The voltage of the batteries can be up to 54 volts, the charge storage capacity is 9.0 ampere-hours, or you are familiar with it as Ah.
Apart from the price, these conductive rechargeable batteries also have a significant disadvantage: they are heavy.
You can achieve a higher voltage of a rechargeable battery with more battery cells. Even in power tools, all of which bring their weight with them. It can be often annoying in everyday working life.
The same applies to the Ah values: the more capacity should be available, the more battery cells are needed, the heavier the battery and the device becomes.
Some manufacturers are now taking a step back and are once again focusing on the manageability of the devices in their development. Instead of the usual 18 volts, they offer 12-volt devices which do not quite match the performance of the big brothers (but which is hardly really exploited anyway).
Via an intelligent control system in the battery and device, they master all requirements. You can also use it in a power-saving way on the construction site. The higher battery pack weight plays a subordinate role for the massive power tools that require a lot of power (large angle grinder, circular saw table, hand circular saw, hammer drill). These devices are either heavy themselves (or have to be) or operated stationary.
Before you make a purchase decision, ask first: Do I need the performance indicated on the batteries and devices or is a slightly more frequent battery change not more sensible for my job?
All well-known manufacturers offer their cordless tools with a brushless motor. Due to the absence of the current transmitting brushes, you can reduce the size and weight of the electric devices enormously.
Those who rely on large and powerful rechargeable batteries can compensate a part of the weight disadvantage by choosing a brushless version with more handiness.
The following power tools are indispensable on the construction site:
1. Cordless screwdriver
It could also be described as a "third hand," as often as the common cordless screwdriver for interior fittings uses.
The 18-volt versions are widely used and entirely sufficient for all applications because they offer the best ratio of performance to dead weight. Whether it should be the 2.0 or the 5.0 Ah battery models depends on the central area of application.
Those who screw permanently are better off with 2.0 Ah and a higher exchange rate because the 5.0 Ah variants are much heavier. But then a quick battery charger or a third battery is recommended to be able to work without interruption.

2. Hammer drill
The battery technology of a hammer drill is trimmed for high performance. Therefore, the recommendation is a combination of at least 18 V operating voltage and 4.0 Ah charging capacity upwards.
In contrast to a percussion drill, the individual, low-frequency impacts are not generated by a gear wheel, but individually electrically or pneumatically. It already results in the first performance criterion, namely the impact energy in joules.
Every manufacturer gives a value, some supplement this with "Vibration Control," but if the numbers and designations do not tell you anything, only trying out with the dealer helps.
Although hammer drills have become quieter and quieter in recent years, you should always wear hearing protection with them during work.
Cordless screwdrivers and drills are only suitable for mixing the liquid or pasty building materials to a minimal extent - special agitators are better in any case.
These are now also available with rechargeable batteries. Its performance values are of secondary importance here, as these tools are rarely in continuous operation, 18 volts and 2.0 Ah are entirely sufficient.
However, do not exceed the maximum mixing quantity and the maximum stirring basket diameter specified by the respective manufacturer in order not to overload the motor.
4. Reciprocating saw
Battery-operated reciprocating saws are less of a precision tool for upscale wood cutting than a versatile helper for fast and uncomplicated rough cuts.
Most of them use their reciprocating saws more for dismantling old components. The battery-powered devices need at least 18 volts of voltage for this. With the charging capacity, it becomes interesting here only from 4.0 Ah upwards because such saws must be able to last for a few minutes at a time with thick beams and pipes.
Also, the less noticeable vibrations, depending on the manufacturer, make working a test of strength. You must include an additional handle to the absolute must-haves.
5. Angle Grinder
For interior work, a smaller one-hand angle grinder is usually sufficient to quickly clean up a metal pipe or a stuck bolt here and there.
Theoretically, you can do such cutting work can with a reciprocating saw, but the angle grinder is easier and faster, especially with solid metal components. 18 volts and 4.0 Ah are the minima because during work with angle grinders both high power peaks and continuous load occur. The cut-off wheel size of 115 or 125 mm is large enough for all indoor applications.
6. Oscillating multitools
The multifunctional tools always sound a bit like do-it-yourselfers and hobby cellars, but they are extremely useful helpers on the construction site.
They are unbeatable in places where the working space is narrow and the cuts should nevertheless be reasonably precise. Notches in panel materials of all kinds are much easier and cleaner to make than by hand or with a jigsaw.
