What You Need To Know About Band Saws
The band saw, or also called a worm saw, is a pedal or electric tool that has a toothed metal band, flexible, long and narrow. The band moves on two wheels that are in the same vertical plane with a space between them. These saws can be used in carpentry and metalwork, as well as to cut various materials, and are very useful in cutting irregular shapes.
This machine is composed of a frame, in the shape of a gooseneck, supporting two balanced flywheels superimposed in the same vertical plane and on which an endless saw blade called a band is enclosed.
Types of Band Saws
The market offers three types of band saws, each with specific functions and care, according to a particular kind of work: manual, semi-automatic and automatic, which perform horizontal, vertical and angular cuts and, in turn, are classified into:
Band saws for metal cutting
These are those that require a coolant that is constantly supplied on the band saw blade, keeping the saw at a low temperature. In turn, an overheating that would cause defects in the cuts and shorten the useful life of the blade. Lack of cooling also results in a slower cut.
Band Saws for Wood Cutting
Consists of a highly flexible toothed metal blade that is cut and welded according to the diameter of the machine's flywheels. It produces the cut by continuous sliding on the piece to cut.
Automated band saws
These are the ones that handle pre-established feeding speeds, reversal, and part clamping. They are generally used in work environments where it is not convenient to have a machine operator for each device. Some of these saws operate by computer numerical control to make more precise cuts.
Parts of a Band Saw
Band saws are comprised of seven fundamental parts, and these are:
Remember that the entire length of the belt must be protected, leaving only the part of the belt that is going to cut uncovered. The condition of the tape must be good, and it must not be worn. Use the appropriate tape for the material to be cut.
The tension on the tape is critical. When the tape is poorly tensioned in a band saw, we will have some problems.
In case the tape tension is insufficient, we will get bad terminations, deviated cuts and premature wear of the tape. If there is over tensioning in the belt, we will be able to make the belt break. There are tension gauges or tape sheet tension meters to achieve the proper tension.
The use of gloves as well as safety glasses is essential. Check that the electrical installation is in optimum condition. The tape must be in excellent condition, for safety reasons, beyond achieving a good result.
