Hitachi DB3DL

Dimension: 8.3 x 1.8 x 5.3 inches
Weight: 14.4 ounces

Hitachi DB3DL2 is a bar screwdriver with a bendable handle which was originally designed for professional use.

The Hitachi rod wrench has a lot to offer in terms of equipment. In addition to its two gears, it has a torque limiter with 21 steps and a drilling step. The folding handle is rubberized and fits the hand very well. It means you don't get tired so quickly, even if the working conditions are not ideal like working with tight corners. An LED can be switched on if you desire a slightly recessed button on the top of the bent handle.

It has a table charger that delivers a charging current of three amperes and ensures that the two batteries supplied are charged with their 1.5-ampere hours in half an hour each. Since the batteries are then designed for a good long working time, you can usually work without interruption.

Small but Powerful

The Hitachi screwdriver achieves remarkable results for its size.

It can efficiently work wonders with screws up to 5 x 80 millimeters into solid wood. It can even do the massive work of 6 x 100-millimeter screw with 90 percent countersunk. It is a remarkable result for such a small cordless screwdriver.

Furthermore, the sensitive torque adjustment didn't go unnoticed. Even with small screws, the flush screwing works very well. Meanwhile, other models tend to turn small screws too deep into the wood. It is unattractive because the screw can break and damage the material.

The many different torque limits of the Hitachi ensure that even small screw sizes can always be screwed in flush.

Conscious of the need to deliver an excellent machine, Hitachi, unfortunately, decided not to include any further accessories in the scope of delivery. Contrary to some other candidates, who supply an extensive set of bits, Hitachi only has one standard bit.

On the other hand, the instruction manual is clear, and readable in most languages known to us.

The Hitachi DB3DL2 is suitable for all household, but also fits demanding screw driving jobs. With its slim and handy design, it can be easily carried in the toolbox. However, it might deem quite expensive for some especially when used only for occasional household tasks.

  • High torque
  • Exchangeable battery
  • Fast charging time

    Very flexible torque limitation
  • Difficult to handle for left-hand users

Can be costly for occasional household use

If you prefer a cordless screwdriver with a standard pistol grip, BOSCH GSR MX2 might be the best option for you.

The small blue screwdriver from the Bosch Professional series, the GSR Mx2 Drive, is supplied with a table charger and optionally with or without a replaceable battery. The charger has a voltage of 3.6 to 12 volts and a charging current of 1.5 amperes. So, you can also charge 12 Volt batteries from Bosch if you have them at home.

With Good Grip Handle

The cordless screwdriver is tiny and lies on the hand surprisingly well. The Mx2 Drive is equipped with an LED that illuminates the work area very well. Bits are plugged into the hex socket. The areas where you touch the cordless screwdriver are all rubberized.

Speed Control

The 2-speed control is interesting. In contrast to the usual cordless screwdrivers, the Bosch has no slide switch for switching between the first and second gear. Instead, the switch is designed in such a way that it runs at half speed (second gear). If you push it all the way through, it shifts to the first gear with lower rpm and more power. If you want to turn the screw slowly, press the switch all the way down.

In the first gear, the machine runs with 150, while the second one operates with 580 revolutions per minute. The little machine has a lot of power; it can screw in the 6 x 100-millimeter screw to 90 percent before it switches off.

Despite its nominally higher torque, it does not have a torque limit.

Another weak point is the side-mounted switches for the direction of rotation are easy to operate. It is very likely that it can be pressed accidentally which can disturb the workflow.

  • High torque
  • Exchangeable battery
  • 2-speed gearbox
  • The direction of rotation switch can be operated too easily (inadvertent switching)

    No torque limit

The RT-SD 3.6 li from Einhell is not only a good alternative for occasional screwdrivers but also our price-performance winner.

Einhell RT-SD is a handy compact screwdriver with a pistol grip which can be converted into a rod screwdriver thanks to its rotatable handle. Like the Hitachi, it offers a torque limiter, only in 7 steps instead of the 21 of the Hitachi Regardless, it is sufficient for most jobs.

The working area is illuminated by two bright LEDs which are arranged on the right and left of the lower part of the unit. It makes the work a lot easier, especially when working in dark corners or poorly lit rooms.

Charging Station

To charge, simply insert the cordless screwdriver into the charging station. A display with three LEDs indicates the current charging status at the touch of a button. It is visible at the top of the machine.

The lithium-ion battery has a capacity of 1.5-ampere hours and is permanently installed, so you can't change the battery. Einhell supplies 11 standard bits for this purpose, with which most of the screw driving work can be done.

Torque Pre-Selection

Einhell’s torque pre-selection works quite well. The little helper can barely manage screws up to a maximum of 4.5 x 60 millimeters. The adjustment of the torque works well with small screws such as 3 x 25 and 3.5 x 25 millimeters. With the screw 3 x 40 millimeters, even if you switch to level 6there is no significant difference to the maximum level.

So, even if you have to make a few compromises with Einhell's cordless screwdriver, the machine is still entirely sufficient in terms of performance. Its level of work can't be seen from all screwdrivers within this price range.

The Makita cordless screwdriver comes in a large transport box. The delivery includes two rechargeable batteries with a capacity of 3 ampere hours each. The table charger delivers a voltage between 7.2 and 18 volts and a charging current of 9. The included 3 amp-hour rechargeable batteries are fully charged in about 20 minutes - top!

Handling and Processing

The machine is quite short and fits on the hand very well with its completely rubberized handle.

The slide switches for the direction of rotation are arranged on the left and right, and at the top you can choose between the first and second gear with a slide switch. In the first gear the machine rotates at 600 rpm while the second gear does at a maximum of 1,900 rpm.

The torque is adjusted in 21 steps via a rotating ring. In addition, there is a drilling stage: the quick-action drill chuck accommodates drills up to 13 millimetres. A hook is attached to the side of the lower handle, which can be attached on both sides. The LED work light illuminates the working area very well and has an afterglow function of about 10 seconds.

Makita also offers one of the best torque settings. Even small 3 millimeter screws were always screwed in flush. The gradations could be adjusted precisely and always guaranteed flush screw connections.

Powerful and without Significant Points of Criticism

The screwing in of the 6 x 80, 8 x 100, as well as the 6 x 200 millimeter screw could be carried out in the second gear. Makita can screw this screw in completely and still had power reserves - great!

All in all, the Makita drill screwdriver is a very successful machine, and definitely worth its price.  Due to the metal planetary gear and the special protection against dirt and splash water it is designed for hard use and a long service life.

Moreover, Makita offers many more machines in the 18 volt range.

  • Very short charging time
  • High speed
  • Very high torque
  • Quite expensive

Dimensions: 14 x 3.5 x 11 inches
105.76 ounces

The drill screwdriver is supplied in the typical Sortimo L-Box. Included in the delivery is a bit set with 24 bits and a magnetic bit holder, 2 drill sets with 7 drills each (7 wood and 7 metal drills), a retaining clip, which can be attached to the bottom of the handle left or right, and two batteries as standard.

The machine lies well on the hand; the handle is slim and rubberized. The LED work light illuminates the working area perfectly. Unfortunately, it has no afterglow function.

Excellent Torque Adjustment

The torque adjustment of the blue Bosch machine works excellently and reliably maintains the penetration depth of small screw diameters. Screwing in the larger screw diameters was not a problem, but Bosch can only manage to screw in about 80 percent of the screw depth for the 10 x 180 millimeter screw before it switches off.

Of course, the professional units are designed for tough construction site use and defy moisture and dust. The workmanship is accordingly very good, but it showed a little weakness in the performance.

The charger is also too weak and therefore too slow for a professional unit. There are deductions for this in the overall standings.

However, Bosch offers a very large range of 18-volt machines, all compatible with the same battery system and the same charger. If the Makita range of battery-powered devices is too small for you, you are on the safe side with Bosch.

  • High speed
  • High torque
  • Lots of accessories
  • Torque adjustment is not exact – small range

Dimensions: 15.55 x 3.93 x 14.17 inches

If you don't have quite such high demands on a powerful cordless screwdriver, then the Einhell TE-CD 18 Li is a good choice for significantly less money. It is also a powerful cordless screwdriver.

Like most devices, the Einhell comes with a rechargeable battery and charger. The battery is fully charged and ready for use within 30 minutes. Three lights indicate at the touch of a button whether the battery needs to be charged.

Fortunately, it belongs to the in-house battery platform X-Change which makes it compatible with many other Einhell tools. So anyone who owns more of the company's 18-volt devices will benefit happily.

The cordless screwdriver lies well in the hand and has rubberized grip surfaces. At the top, a slide switch is used to shift between first and second gear. In first gear the machine runs at 320 rpm while the second gear at 1,350 rpm. The torque is adjusted in 23 stages plus one drilling stage.

The Einhell cordless screwdriver had no problems adjusting the torque, even with 3 millimetre screws. Series screw connections were therefore no problem even with small diameters.

When screwing in, the Einhell with the 6 x 80, 8 x 100, and also 6 x 200 millimeter screws had no problem. Meanwhile, with 10 x 180 millimeter screw, the machine switches off at about 70 percent screw-in depth.

As the two previous recommendations from Einhell have already shown, you can use the somewhat cheaper equipment with a clear conscience when you're not doing too demanding work.

  • Short charging time
  • Exact torque adjustment
  • Low speed

The 3.6 volt machines are very small, compact and light cordless screwdrivers which were mainly designed for private users—except rod screwdrivers. This type of 3.6-volt screwdriver is often used for professional groups such as electricians or fitters in furniture construction.

Depending on the field of application and the frequency of use, you should buy an appropriate cordless screwdriver. For occasional work in the house, it does not have to be an 18 volt device.

18-volt devices are mainly aimed at ambitious DIY enthusiasts and craftsmen who want to operate other machines with the same battery system in addition to power, speed and battery capacity.
